On Saturday 18th July Exmouth Pilot Gig Club took part in the annual Teignmouth Gig Regatta, their fourth regatta of the season. A record 14 clubs entered the event in what turned out to be very challenging sea conditions when the wind unexpectedly freshened to a force 5 from the SE (onshore).
The Ladies ‘B’ team were the first crew to compete in our gig ‘Rodney Bey’. After a good start and a strong row on the first part of the triangular course, they eventually tired on the final leg against the wind, finishing last. Unfortunately for some of the ladies, they had to take to the water again straight away as part of the Ladies ‘C’ team. Despite this, they gave a good account of themselves in the worsening conditions, finishing last behind Dart.
The best performance of the afternoon came from the Men’s ‘B’ team. Continuing the improvement shown in recent regattas, they rowed powerfully throughout the course to finish well ahead of a strong and more experienced Sidmouth crew in 11th place.
The last event of the afternoon (the Ladies and Men’s Vets races being cancelled as the conditions continued to worsen) saw the Men’s ‘C’ team take to the water. A competitive start saw them still in contention at the first turn. It was only after the second turn that they lost a bit of momentum in the difficult conditions but they still managed to keep the gap between themselves and the boats in front to a respectable 3 lengths.
Exmouth’s next regatta will be at Lyme Regis on Sat. 8th August. If you are on holiday in Lyme Regis on that day come and support us and say hello.
