The sea was calm but it began to rain whilst we were setting up camp on Sidmouth’s Clifton Beach for our seventh round on the gig regatta circuit. The rain continued during the first two races, ensuring a damp start to the proceedings.
The first Exmouth race was the Ladies’ B in which the team rowed gamely in the rain, finishing not far behind Langstone Cutters. This was followed by the Men’s B race, by which time, the weather had begun to ease. After a good start, the crew rowed strongly and after picking off Sidmouth on the final leg, edged just ahead of Weymouth at the finish for sixth place behind Lyme Regis.
The Ladies’ race saw a composite crew entered with the help of a couple of rowers from Sidmouth and one from Bridport. The scratch team, which had never rowed together before, fought hard to finish a game last and once again behind Langstone.
The Men’s Vet’s race was an action packed one for Exmouth. Having edged ahead of Sidmouth on the first leg, our race with Bridport began. At the first buoy there was a clash of oars but we had just got ahead. Along the second leg we dug deep and gained enough distance to have the right of water at the next turn. Here there was a minor collision between the gigs, with their bow just nudging our stern. Both crews were disrupted, but Exmouth’s Rodney Bey emerged the stronger and pulled away to finish sixth.
Our final race, the Mixed, was once again made up from volunteers rowing for the second and third times. After a good start, the crew began to tire as the race progressed and the toils of the earlier races began to take effect. After a gruelling race the team eventually finished eighth behind Bridport.
Last year, the Sidmouth event was our very first regatta, where we entered three races and finished last in them all. This year, we entered five races and finished well up the field in two of them, which demonstrates just how far we have developed in such a short period of time.
