WPGC: Friday 1st May – Sunday 3rd May 2020
It’s that time of year again. As one season ends we’re already thinking about the next one and the big ticket event, as ever, is the WPGC on the Isles of Scilly. Please respond below and fill out the survey if you would be interested in taking part. Do so at the earliest convenience, and we may be able to draft some provisional crews a little earlier than normal, although no promises that anything will be finalised before New Year as we want some time to see people and give newer rowers the opportunity to develop.
As you probably know, in common with most other clubs,Exmouth will only be permitted to enter one crew per category this time, which means places will be limited. We want to continue the momentum we built up during a fantastic 2019 season by entering the strongest crews we can for all races. This means we are unlikely to be able to guarantee everyone a row.
We may explore crews of more than six in order to mitigate for injuries or other unforeseen events, and to ensure regular training can happen as easily as possible, so don’t immediately rule yourself out if you don’t think you’re in the top six. If this is done, we will aim to maintain high standards in every crew, however, so everyone who puts their name down will be expected to be as equally dedicated to training on and off the water as the rest of their crew. Late crew changes will be made if deemed necessary.
The standard required to attend Scilly this year is likely to be high, but it will depend on those who put their names forward so please sign up if you’re keen.
Obviously we would love people to attend Scilly whether or not they are picked for a crew, but we understand if you would only make the trip to row. As already stated we won’t know the required standard until we see some names, but feel free to discuss with coxswains or selectors where they think you are in terms of rowing attainment. Please bear in mind, however, that selectors don’t always agree and no crews are picked until provisional crews are posted.
It’s all a bit different this year, so we appreciate your understanding as we work out the best way to do things. Get your names down and we’ll update you on next steps shortly.
UPDATE: Any erg times you wish to submit to aid in selection can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org or added to the Exmouth Gig Fitness Facebook page. Preferred exercises are 5k, 3k, 4x400m. Feel free to send breakdowns of any ‘long and light’ rows if you’re still spinning up on the rowing machine. They can still be useful. We are unlikely to disqualify anyone based on their erg time but commitment to fitness will be an important criterion.
We’ve got a reasonable number of signups so may start making some decisions soon. Sign up if you want to be part of the conversation.
