In order to keep the club progressing we need to raise funds on a regular basis.

Monies go towards general running costs, insurance, kit and will be going towards our next gig.

We’d like to be in a position to order a new gig by 2020.

If you have any fund raising ideas or events, especially if you’d like to take the lead and organise something please express it on this thread.

It’s worth applying to Norman’s Charitable Trust in Budleigh if you’re still on the lookout for fundraising ideas? They’re on fb, but you can google them. They meet quite frequently.

What about a sponsored club row on the Ergs?

When travelling back from Scilly, I had the idea that I’d like to row around the coast of Britain. It was pointed out to me that this was quite a challenge for a number of reasons, but it might be possible as a cumulative effort by the club on Ergs…

The Wiki page on the Coast of Britain reports it to be (on average and without the extra islands) 12,429Km or 7,723 miles. Some of you may know more accurately than that, but as a rough estimate that would probably be robust in terms of distance to aim for for sponsorship.

I thought we could aim for different personal targets, and sign up to achieve these over 6 months starting from September. We could ask for sponsorship per mile and log these on a joint page somewhere. We could raise funds for our club and split sponsorship with a nautical charity at the same time?

I think this would be quite a challenge. If 40 of us did it, we’d be looking at about 8 hours a month on the Erg each. We could probably count time in the actual boats though!

If there was any interest, I’d be happy to approach LED or the rowing club and see if we could have access to the Ergs at quiet times either individually or for a few people per session.

I appreciate this isn’t really worked out yet, but is there any interest?

Sounds like a great idea to me Katie.

Your suggestion on different personal targets makes sense not just from making it manageable for all, but also your friends/family will be able to see that you are stretching yourself and will be more inclined to donate.

Also the idea about splitting proceeds with a nautical charity (e.g. RNLI) is a great one…a lot of people would be likely to donate to RNLI (or another well know national charity) and Exmouth Gig could piggy back on this.

As we said when you first mentioned it this is a fab idea Katie. Me and Jay are definitely in – sounds like fun and a great way to raise money not just for the club but other nautical charities.
