The Dorset Indoor Rowing Championship took place this weekend with two Exmouth Gig Club rowers competing. Gary Cook and Ollie Knights joined two other rowers, Lucy Bufton of Salcombe Gig Club and Russell Russell Brayshaw (currently unaffiliated but will be joining Swanage) to form the “Masked Barbarians”.
The 5km men’s team race took place on Friday with the fastest four times recorded and added together as the overall team time. The Masked Barbarians came in a very respectable 12th place; ahead of the Rowhedge Costal Rowing Club and just 4 seconds behind Poole Gig Rowing club.
…All the more impressive if you take into account that they had only been formed that day, were only a team of four, were not an all-male crew (needed to be 50:50 split to qualify as mixed) and two of the members could be termed super vets!
Gary Cook then kept the flag flying for Exmouth in the individual pool races on the Saturday where he secured a place in “League D”. On the Sunday, Gary secured the silver medal in his pool with a very strong 2km in 7m 31s 7ss.
